Here’s All You Need to Know About Visiting Neuschwanstein in the Winter
Bavaria is a truly magical region during the winter, between Christmas markets, seasonal dishes, and unique cultural traditions like the Krampuslauf. Those visiting the area, however, will surely want to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, a popular attraction full of wonder, beauty, and magic. But we often have visitors ask: What is Neuschwanstein like in the winter? Is it worth visiting? Is it even open?
At All Things Garmisch, we lead tours to Neuschwanstein year-round, and we can attest that visiting this incredible palace during the winter is an entirely unique experience. That said, it may not be for everyone! Here’s what you need to know about visiting Neuschwanstein during the winter months.
Is Neuschwanstein Worth Visiting in the Winter?
Having toured Neuschwanstein hundreds of times, we can attest that Neuschwanstein has plenty to offer visitors during the winter. That said, it all depends on the individual, so the castle may or may not be worth visiting in the winter depending on your priorities.
To us and many clients, the gorgeous snowy surroundings, holiday spirit, and hot drinks all add up to a wonderful winter experience. But for those less fond of cold weather—and those who must get a photo from Mary’s Bridge—consider going at another time of year.
A Winter Wonderland
For fans of winter scenery, few sights can measure up to Neuschwanstein covered in snow. The majestic, soaring towers surrounded by snow-laden pine trees are something out of a postcard. Depending on the direction of your viewing, the snow-capped Alps and open snowy plains provide the perfect backdrop for this stunning palace.
The village nearby, Hohenschwangau, is also full of hot drinks and warm places to enjoy the cozy Bavarian atmosphere and winter scenery.
Drawbacks to Consider
Because it’s located on the side of a mountain, Neuschwanstein can be chillier than you might expect. During the winter, the wind is truly biting, and even with multiple layers visitors should expect to be a bit cold.
In addition, certain surrounding areas may be closed during the winter months. Specifically, Mary’s Bridge—the spot with the most iconic view of Neuschwanstein—is not open during the winter. These factors may make the trip less ideal for some.
Is Neuschwanstein Castle Open on Christmas?
Neuschwanstein is not open on Christmas. While the castle is generally open year-round, even during the winter, the interior is closed to the public on December 24th and 25th (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).
Neuschwanstein is also closed on December 31st and January 1st (New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day). This can limit the days that are available to visit the castle late in the year.
How to Make Your Winter Trip to Neuschwanstein Worth It
If the wonderful wintry vistas aren’t enough to encourage you to visit Neuschwanstein in the winter, there are many ways to make your experience even more memorable.
Sure, you can’t admire the view of Neuschwanstein from Mary’s Bridge—but you can admire it on the walk up, from within the castle, and from the village of Hohenschwangau while sipping a hot mulled wine.
And while Neuschwanstein itself does not have a Christmas market, these bustling attractions dot cities throughout the Bavarian countryside. You’ll have your pick between markets in Füssen, Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and many other locations.
In other words, while some areas will be closed during the winter, there will be plenty of unique opportunities to add to the overall experience—making the trip to Neuschwanstein in the winter well worth it.
